Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of knowledge in human life,
particularly from an Islamic perspective. According to Imam Al-Ghazali,
knowledge is not merely related to intellectual understanding but also serves as a
foundation for understanding religious teachings, developing noble character,
and drawing closer to Allah SWT. This study aims to identify and describe the
virtues of knowledge, the pursuit of knowledge, and the teaching of knowledge
according to Imam Al-Ghazali in Ihya’ Ulum al-Din, particularly in the Book of
Knowledge (Kitab al-‘Ilm). This study employs library research using a descriptive qualitative approach. The
primary data source is Ihya’ Ulum al-Din, particularly the Book of Knowledge,
while secondary data sources consist of relevant books, journals, and other
literature. Data are collected by reading, understanding, identifying, and
examining relevant literature. The data are then analyzed using content analysis.
The findings indicate that the virtue of knowledge lies in its noble position as a
guide for understanding the truth, practicing religious teachings, developing
commendable behavior, and attaining benefits. Knowledge should be
accompanied by practice and directed toward drawing closer to Allah SWT. The
virtue of those who seek knowledge is reflected in sincere intentions, humility,
respect for teachers, dedication, perseverance, and patience in learning.
Meanwhile, the virtue of teaching knowledge is demonstrated through the role of
teachers as transmitters of knowledge and guides in moral development,
characterized by sincerity, compassion, patience, and exemplary conduct.
Therefore, knowledge is truly virtuous when it is put into practice, cultivates noble
character, and provides benefits to human life.
