Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of using tongue twisters
in enhancing English pronunciation among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 3
Panyabungan in the 2024/2025 academic year. The study was conducted based on
the fact that many Indonesian EFL learners face persistent challenges in
pronunciation, particularly in articulation, intonation, and fluency, which often
hinder clear communication. Tongue twisters were selected as a teaching technique
because they provide repeated practice with complex sound patterns in a fun and
engaging way. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental design, involving two groups: an experimental group taught using
tongue twisters and a control group taught using conventional methods. The
population of the study consisted of 50 students, with class 11F1
as the experimental
group and class 11F2
as the control group. Data were collected through pre-tests
and post-tests that measured students’ pronunciation in terms of articulation,
intonation, and fluency. The collected data were analyzed using normality tests,
homogeneity tests, and an independent samples t-test. The findings revealed that
the experimental group showed a higher improvement in pronunciation skills
compared to the control group. The average post-test score of the experimental
group was 7.99, while the control group achieved 7.45. Statistical analysis
confirmed a significant difference between both groups, with a t-value of 9.54 and
a significance level of p < 0.001. This indicates that the tongue twister technique
had a meaningful impact on improving students’ pronunciation performance. In
conclusion, the use of tongue twisters proved to be an effective strategy in teaching
pronunciation, as it not only enhanced students’ clarity, fluency, and intonation as
it enhanced students’ clarity, fluency, and intonation in speaking English. Previous
studies indicate that tongue twisters have potential to support pronunciation
learning in EFL contexts
