This study aimed to analyze the speaker’s directive utterances in the Markobar tradition of Mandailing Natal wedding ceremonies. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of 99 utterances produced by the Parhata in a documented Markobar session. The findings showed that 17 utterances were identified as directive speech acts, consisting of six types: advice (9), prohibition (3), warning (2), request (1), command (1), and invitation (1). Advice was the most frequently occurring type. Regarding realization, 7 utterances were realized directly and 10 indirectly. Direct directives explicitly expressed the intended action, while indirect directives conveyed the intended meaning through statements, expectations, hopes, conditional expressions, or consequences. The findings indicate that directive utterances in Markobar function not only to influence the hearers’ behavior but also to convey customary, moral, and religious values. Thus, Parhata plays an important role in transmitting Mandailing cultural guidance through Hata Sipaingot.
